In 90’s…

The 1990s are known as the dark years of Turkey. Events such as the assassination of General Eşref Bitlis and journalist Uğur Mumcu, the Susurluk accident, and the post-modern coup of February 28 all took place in the 1990s. What makes the Başbağlar massacre even more interesting is that it happened right after the Sivas events on July 2, 1993. As a result of the provocation that took place in the Madımak Hotel in Sivas on July 2, 1993, 33 people were killed. After 3 days; On July 5, 1993, Başbağlar village in Erzincan was targeted. PKK terrorists massacred 33 villagers. It was clear that this was retaliation and revenge. Those who were killed 3 days ago were Alevis, and those killed in the village were religious Sunnis. The goal was clearer: to destroy Turkey’s unity and brotherhood.

“Justice will be served”

According to the news of today’s Akit newspaper, the President of Başbağlar Village Association Mehmet Ali Dikkaya said, “The same gatherings carried out Sivas and Başbağlar, which was right next to it. It was a bloody provocation of those who wanted to stir up our country. We saw it. We broke the game. We have full faith that sooner or later justice will definitely be manifested,” he said. Stating that the Başbağlar case was a legal scandal, Dikkaya continued: “Despite the statement of the accused who participated in the massacre, no one was punished. There were those who were caught and released 28 years ago. Many of the defendants who were tried and acquitted filed a lawsuit against our state and received compensation. Only one person related to the incident was sentenced to 14 years for being a member of the organization, and another person was sentenced to aid and abet the organization. No real research was done at that time. The case must be considered in all its aspects. That dark process must be seen again in front of justice.

başbağlar

They stole money, gold and valuables!

In the Kemaliye district of Erzincan, the pain of the Başbağlar massacre, in which 33 civilians were massacred by terrorists 28 years ago, and one of the largest civilian massacres of the terrorist organization PKK, does not cease. PKK terrorists, who came to Başbağlar village, 220 kilometers from the city center, on the evening of 5 July 1993, gathered the women in the creek, looted the houses, took money, gold and valuables and set fire to all the houses. The terrorists, who killed 5 people who opposed the persecution by setting fire to their homes, gathered 28 men who had prayed the evening prayer and left the mosque in the village square. The terrorists, who made propaganda for the organization for a while, later shot these people as well. After the incident, hundreds of empty cartridge cases were found in the region.

Retrial is essential

Cüneyt Toraman, one of the lawyers for the victims of the Başbağlar massacre, said, “This case has been covered up somehow. If the Başbağlar massacre had been investigated in detail, it would have been understood who carried out the provocation in Sivas. This has been avoided. We are talking about 33 souls. This case should definitely be seen again,” he said. Emphasizing that no one was punished after the trial, Toraman said, “No one was punished in this case. Never too late for anything. We’re talking about the brutal murder of 33 people. The Ministry of Justice should take action and pave the way for a retrial,” he said.

Critical questions

  • Why was the case that was supposed to be heard in the authorized and authorized Erzincan State Security Court, transferred to İzmir SSC, which is 1200 kilometers away?
  • Why were only 20 people detained when the massacre was confirmed by the victims of the terrorist group of 100 people?
  • Why were those allegedly involved in the massacre not confronted with the relatives of the victims?
  • Why was the connection between the massacre and Sivas not investigated, even though the terrorists left a handwritten letter “Sivas’s revenge was taken”?
  • Why was the crime scene investigation done by soldiers sent to the region instead of professional teams? Why was the obfuscation of the evidence allowed?
  • Why weren’t ballistic investigations done on the shell casings found at the crime scene?
