For the last few days, Turkey has been talking about the statements of former parliamentarian, writer and singer Zülfü Livaneli about the Turkish left. Livaneli, in a statement to a website, said, “Was Baykal leftist! It doesn’t matter. He is a typical Sunni, right-wing, Ankara politician.” Livaneli said, “Was Baykal a leftist? It has nothing to do with it. Baykal is a typical Sunni, right-wing, Ankara politician. Baykal could very well have served in the DYP, ANAP, DP (Turkish right-wing parties) and was very would have been more successful.” he said.
Zülfü Livaneli, “What then is Baykal’s view to the left?” gave the following answer to the question:
“Deniz Baykal does not like Kurds, Alevis and the oppressed. He has said this himself many times, it has appeared in the press.”
Livaneli also said, “Ecevit came together with the Fethullah Gülen organization, gave them quotas and offered all kinds of opportunities. It was Bülent Ecevit, not Tayyip Erdoğan, who first established the community in the state. Long story short, people like Ecevit and Baykal are not leftists, they are typical Turkish nationalists who dislike the left.”
Are the out-of-the-box explanations a different agenda item?
The explanations are certainly interesting in many ways. And that these explanations are groundbreaking…
But why did Livaneli make such a statement?
Does he want to return to politics?
The answers to these questions are unknown. But this is also a fact… These statements also do not reflect the truth completely. Livaneli accuses Baykal of being a ‘typical Sunni‘. If Baykal is a typical Sunni, why did he support the headscarf ban? Of course, we do not know whether Baykal loves Alevis or not. But there were Alevis within the CHP during the Baykal period as well. But no one can love Alevis as much as Kılıçdaroğlu. Because many segments in Turkey agree that the CHP has become an Alevi party in the Kılıçdaroğlu era.
